While serving his 10th year in prison, Ulbricht wrote a brief essay on expressing his admiration for Bitcoin's enduring resilience, citing it as a source of inspiration. He titled it, "Facing Life in Prison, Bitcoin's Resilience Inspires Me."
Ulbricht made his first public appearance since 2013 during the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami, delivering a phone interview from the maximum-security prison in Tucson, Arizona. Attendees listened intently as he discussed the growth of Bitcoin. "I’ve seen incredible innovation. I’ve seen inspiring courage. We didn’t know how things would turn out for Bitcoin back in the beginning, but over the years, I’ve been continually impressed with what you’ve accomplished— We are transforming the global economy. We have brought a taste of freedom and equality to far corners of the world. I know we can transform criminal justice, too."
In another brief essay penned by Ulbricht called 'Bitcoin Equals Freedom', he delved into the beginning of Bitcoin after its release by Satoshi, highlighting Bitcoin as the antidote to a currency lacking in centralised authority and forgery.
